In typical Nigerian music (documentation) fashion, it is only fitting that the widely reported figure for most wins in the most prestigious award in Nigeria is false. As a matter of fact, the social media account of TurnTable Charts has been guilty of reporting this false information during the last Headies Award. However, due to the contentious and conflicting reports from various media platforms and individuals, a fact-check had to be carried out.
Wizkid holds the record for most wins in the award history – that is true. But the artiste does not have the 20 awards that is widely reported after his massive night at the show on Sunday. Instead, he has 17.
Here are all of the artiste’s wins in Headies history
Culled from Headies website (and Wikipedia)
The widely reported 20 wins comes from a double counting on the artiste’s Wikipedia page; his Song of the Year award for “Ojuelegba” and Best Pop/R&B Award for Ayo appear twice on his Wikipedia page. Additionally, the artiste’s is labeled as a winner of Best Music Video for ”Come Closer.” Going by Headies policy, the award belongs only to the video director – Daps.
Finally, on the artiste’s Wikipedia page and on various Headies Wikipedia pages, his 2015 Album of the Year win for Ayo is missing. It is also interesting to note that Olamide is widely reported to have done a 3-peat of Album of the Year wins; however, Headies’ website says different. Olamide, who was nominated for Street OT, lost the award to Wizkid’s Ayo.
