Darlsweetboy Counts the Cost of the Come Up on “SHENKA”
Darlsweetboy releases “SHENKA” through Dvpper Digital. The single is out now on Spotify, Apple Music, Audiomack, Boomplay and all major platforms, with an official lyric video.
“SHENKA” sits between mainstream Afrobeats and the Lagos street sound. Shallythechampion, who records as SB (NGA), produced it, and he builds the track with more restraint than the subject matter would suggest. There is room in it. The writing gets to breathe.
It is a flex record with a shadow on it. Darlsweetboy sounds like someone enjoying the win and counting what it cost at the same time, and he never picks a side. Plenty of Nigerian records celebrate the come up. Not many admit what the come up took.
“SHENKA” is me celebrating and remembering at the same time,” Darlsweetboy says. “You can hear both if you listen properly. I wanted something people could dance to without me lying about how I got here.”
He has been doing this independently since 2015, working up through a crowded industry without a machine behind him, and he has more than twenty songs out. Santorini with Rybeena and Pray with G.O.E are among the ones that travelled furthest. His records tend to find their audience on TikTok first, where he carries a large following, and SHENKA is built for that. Listen HERE!
