Spotify Wrapped 2024: Nigerian Music’s Dominance in Sub-Saharan Africa

As the year comes to an end, Spotify has once again released its annual Wrapped data from its desk, revealing music streaming trends across Sub-Saharan Africa. Since Spotify's expansion into Africa in 2021, the platform has not only showcased the brilliance of Nigerian talents but also highlighted their growing influence on the global stage. This year’s data continues to demonstrate the record-breaking achievements of Nigerian artistes as they dominate the charts and captivate listeners worldwide. This year’s Wrapped unwraps Nigeria’s top streaming cities, top Nigeria’s artistes in global charts, the most streamed artistes, as well as the most streamed recordings and project albums in Sub-Saharan Africa, and so much more.

The Top Streamed Artistes in Sub-Saharan Africa

For the second year in a row, two-time Grammy nominee Asake reigns as the top streamed artistes in Sub-Saharan Africa. He is followed by global heavyweights Drake, Burna Boy, Seyi Vibez, and Chris Brown, rounding out an impressive top five.

Top Streamed Albums in Sub-Saharan Africa

This year’s most-streamed album in Sub-Saharan Africa is Young Jonn’s ****Jiggy Forever. Other albums in the top five include Asake’s Work of Art (also a top contender last year). Asake’s third album, Lungu Boy, ODUMODUBLVCK’s fifth mixtape album, EZIOKWU, and Rema’s second studio album, HEIS, which received a nomination for the 67th Grammy Awards’ Best Global Music Album.

Most Streamed Recordings in Sub-Saharan Africa

For the top five most streamed recordings in Sub-Saharan Africa are the brilliantly performed Chike’s “Egwu” __featuring MohBad, Asake’s “Lonely At The Top”, Ayo Maff’s “Dealer” with Fireboy DML, ODUMODUBLVCK’s “WOTOWOTO SEASONING” featuring Black Sherif, and Burna Boy’s “Higher”. 

Spotify Wrapped data also unveiled key highlights for Nigerian listeners (2024):

  • Top Nigerian artistes on Global Charts: Ayra Starr, Rema, Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Asake.
  • Top Streaming Cities in Nigeria: Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Abuja.
  • Most Exported artistes: Burna Boy (male) and Ayra Starr (female).
  • Most Shared artistes on WhatsApp: Anendlessocean.
  • Nigerian Spotify users spent over 707 million minutes listening to podcasts, showcasing a growing appetite for diverse content.
