While Uchechi is gaining recognition internationally, her Nigerian roots remain central to her identity. She takes pride in the influence of Nigerian music on her sound and her career, drawing from the rich cultural heritage she was raised in.

In an interview with TurnTable, She talks about her Music and Inspiration, Career and Vision, Future Projects and Goals.

Personal and Artistic Journey

  1. You’ve been dubbed the "Afrosoul Princess." What does this title mean to you, and how does it align with your musical identity?

This title means the most to me, the fact that fans and industry professionals alike have taken the time to gift me this moniker is a great honour. It encompasses the genres I began exploring early in my career and my youthful, fun, playful nature. I look forward to my next title and levelling up in the eyes of everyone.

  1. How has your experience living across eight countries and three continents influenced your sound and songwriting?

With this amazing opportunity, I have not only been able to witness different cultures and sounds, I have been able to experience them fully because I lived in them. I built a deep understanding of different genres of music which I apply to my craft. Music is a diverse universal language and experiencing it in different forms has helped me to be more versatile with my melodies and wordplay. This opportunity taught me not to limit my sound but instead welcome and explore all music has to offer.

  1. Balancing a career in music and law is impressive. How do these two worlds complement or challenge each other in your life?

Entertainment and law are the perfect pairing for me. They're both passions that I'm incredibly driven about. The beauty is that they intersect, allowing me to pursue entertainment law later on and apply my legal skills to the industry right now. The only time they clashed was during my university years, when both fields demanded a lot of my attention. Thankfully, that phase is over, and my love for both has helped me navigate their demands successfully.

Music and Inspiration

  1. Your latest EP, ‘Mixed Emotions’, explores themes of love, heartache, and self-discovery. What personal experiences influenced the creation of this project?

My latest project, Mixed Emotions, is a reflection of my personal journey and the shared experiences of my peers. Just as my debut single in 2021, Little Blackbird, explored themes of growth and self-discovery, this EP delves into the complexities of love, heartbreak, and finding one's identity. As we navigate the challenges and triumphs of young adulthood, we often find ourselves grappling with a range of emotions. Mixed Emotions offers a glimpse into this shared experience, exploring the confusion, overwhelm, and character-building lessons that come with these feelings. I hope that listeners can connect with the emotions expressed in this EP and find solace or inspiration in their own journeys.

  1. Can you walk us through the emotional journey behind the songs on ‘Mixed Emotions’?

The 6-track EP tells a relatable journey of an ambitious woman who demands it is her ‘My Time’ to shine. She then experiences love for the “First Time”, only to be let down by a “Foolish” guy. Heartbroken, she affirms she is “Over You”. Choosing to “Dance” her troubles away with her friends. In the end, she finds strength, refocusing and rebuilding herself without “Margins” as the stars are the limit for her newfound resilience. It is the human journey.

  1. Your single "Underwater" won BBC Music Introducing “Record of the Year 2022.” What inspired that song, and how did it feel to receive such recognition?

‘Underwater’ was inspired by my dear friend and a reflection of the challenges many girls face today. I wanted to create something that inspires and uplifts, reminding listeners that our voices can be heard above the noise. As a lifelong cheerleader for my friends, I have always been passionate about empowering others. Receiving this award was a significant milestone, validating my musical journey and fueling my desire to share meaningful messages.

Career and Vision

  1. As a rising star with a growing global following, how do you stay connected to your Nigerian roots in your music?

My Nigerian roots run deep. Stepping back into my family home is like stepping back into Nigeria itself. Nigerian music has always been a constant in my life, topping my playlists year after year. Growing up, it was the soundtrack to my life – from Fela Kuti's electrifying saxophone to the iconic "this is irocking.com" intros before party anthems.

Today's diverse explosion of Afrobeat sounds excites me. I'm drawn to the intricate rhythms, infectious energy, and overall uptempo vibe of most Afrobeat music, and I incorporate those elements into my own sound. The unique cultural instruments and beats of Nigeria hold a special place in my heart, and I try to weave them into my music as well.

The most powerful aspect of Nigerian music is its ability to literally move people through melody and lyrics. This is a talent I'm incredibly proud to have inherited from my Nigerian roots

  1. How has being signed to EMELUX records shaped your journey as an artiste?

EMELUX Records is a nurturing ground for artists seeking to explore unique sounds. Their unwavering support and belief in my abilities have been instrumental in my artistic journey. It's a creative haven where traditional values fuel innovative music.

  1. Winning the 'New Female Artiste of the Year' at LIMA in 2023 was a major milestone. What does this recognition mean for your future in the music industry?

This award was another milestone, validating the support of my dedicated fanbase. It signifies that I'm being recognized in influential circles and that paves the way for future opportunities.

Future Projects and Goals

  1. Can you give us any hints about what’s next for you after this EP? Are there any collaborations or upcoming projects we should look forward to?

Following this EP, I'm excited to explore collaborations and create new sounds. I have some of my music featured as part of the soundtrack for a movie by Obi Emelonye ‘Black Mail’ on Amazon Prime. Generally, I am looking forward to creating more music.

12.  With the success you’ve already achieved, what are your long-term aspirations as both an artiste and a lawyer?

My long-term goal is to make a meaningful impact on the music industry by creating music that resonates with fans and connects with them on a personal level. While my primary focus is on music, I also value my legal background and may explore opportunities in entertainment law in the future.
