Highlights of TurnTable Charts & The Native Songs of the Summer Charts
This week, we published the first issues of the Songs of the Summer Charts which is the chart that will captures the hottest Nigerian and African Songs of the summer. All through the duration of the Songs of the Summer Charts, we will bring you weekly highlights and major talking points and takeaways from the chart.
Global African Songs of the Summer Chart is the first of its kind that will capture the biggest African songs in the international scene during the summer months. With access to airplay in over 80 countries, you can expect that this will be an exciting battle.
For over a year now, a particular song from Africa has attracted unprecedented African and international attention. This song has defied language barriers to become a global smash hit and one of the biggest songs to ever come out of Africa. This song is none other than “Jerusalema” by Producer and DJ, Master KG and with vocals by Nomcebo Zikode.
It’s only befitting that the first chart-topper for the maiden Global African Songs of the Summer Chart is none other than the intercontinental monster hit from South Africa. The song continues to rack up streams and airplay across the world. It drew over 10 million streams and over 340 million radio airplay impressions worldwide during the tracking week.
MasterKG also has the No. 2 song in the chart as he links up with world-famous DJ, David Guetta and veteran singer, Akon for his new release tagged “Shine Your Light”. The single is currently enjoying wide success globally and sits comfortably at the No. 2.
In the past couple of months, “Essence” has been the African song on every lip internationally. “Essence” has grown heavily on the international audience and not a day passes without an international figure having something positive to say about the single. Hence it’s unsurprising that “Essence” is the best performing Nigeria single internationally and third on the chart behind MasterKG’s international smash hit “Jerusalema” and his powerhouse single “Shine Your Light”.
“Essence” accumulated over 500,000 streams and 7.4 million in radio airplay impressions worldwide making it the third biggest African song internationally and the leading Nigerian song internationally. With “Essence” and “Ginger,” Wizkid joins Master KG as the only artistes with two entries as a lead artiste in the top ten this week. “Essence” also makes Tems the only female artiste with two entries on the Global African Songs of the Summer Chart.
Nigerian wonder kid, Omah Lay has captured the hearts of millions in Nigeria and Africa but he has eyes set on the international scene. On the maiden issue of the Global African Songs of the Summer Charts, Omah Lay has four entries with two in the top ten. Remarkably, no artiste has more entries this week on the Global African chart.
Omah Lay’s unforgettable contribution to Olamide’s “Infinity” places him at No. 9. His catchy single “Godly” – and leading title for No. 1 Song of 2021 in the TurnTable Q1 Report – rounds up the top 10. Omah Lay scored his third appearance on the chart with his contribution on Gyakie’s “Forever Remiix” which enters at No. 16 and he made it four with “Bad Influence” occupying the No. 23.
The first issue of the chart brought some pleasant surprises on the international scene. At No. 4 position is Oskido’s “Banky Banky” featuring Afro-house queen Niniola. The South African veteran linked up with Nigerian sensation and together they created a song that has found success with the international audience. “Banky Banky” drew over 16 million in radio impressions globally during the tracking week, enough to earn it a No. 4 position.
An even bigger surprise is Kizz Daniel’s “Nesesari” with Phikeyz which starts at No. 6. “Nesesari’s” bold top ten start was courtesy of its impressive streaming numbers on Spotify & YouTube. Only “Jerusalema,” “Shine Your Light,” and “Essence” recorded more streams than the song during the tracking week. I guess you didn’t see that coming.
Nigeria’s upcoming artiste Guchi also makes a surprise appearance with her single “Jennifer” entering at No. 18. The song’s popularity on Tik Tok has massively contributed to its international popularity. And with this online buzz, it’s unlikely that the single will drop out of the chart anytime soon.
Nigerian youngster, Rema was not left out of the international party as he records three singles on the Global Africa Songs of the Summer Chart. He enters the top 10 with “Soundgasm” at No. 7. His contribution in Jae5’s “Dimension” places him at No. 11, while his party jam “Bounce” enters at No. 25.
Nigerian hitmaker and rapper Olamide registers his presence with three songs. His hit single “Infinity” enters at No .9; Olamide’s “Rock” off his latest album enters at No. 15 and “Loading” featuring Bad Boy Timz enters at No. 18. With these entries, Olamide is the only artiste with the most entries as a lead artiste this week.
Nigeria is the most competitive and leading music market on the continent, so you can always expect that this is going to be a keenly contested chart for the title of the song of the summer.
Hitmaker and superstar Olamide leads the first installment of Nigeria’s song of the summer chart with his single “Rock” off his latest album
UY SCUTTI. Olamide didn’t only lead the chart, he also has 7 entries which are more than any other artistes and this is all thanks to the performance of his new album
With over 8 weeks left in the summer chart, it won’t be a stroll in the park for “Rock” to be crowned the song of the summer. However, Olamide has his eyes on the prize and other artistes have their work cut out for them if they want to wrestle the crown from him.
On the first installment of Nigeria’s song of the summer chart, top music label Mavin Records and its affiliate Jonzing World registered their presence in the top 10 in remarkable fashion. Mavin’s rapper Ladipoe has the No. 2 song in the country with “Feelings.” The single has swept across the airwaves and has enjoyed a remarkable run on streaming platforms.
Following closely in the No. 3 is Rema’s “Soundgasm” which is starting to grow on listeners. The self-styled Afro-rave king brings a rush of pleasure to the acoustic senses with this single and he once again displayed his dynamism and range.
Rounding up the top 5 is Ruger’s “Bounce” which has been bouncing back to life in the past couple of weeks. “Bounce” has enjoyed a dream run making it one of the hottest singles in the country.
This summer is already looking like Buju season with his recent sensational run. Hence the summer chart couldn’t have come at a better time for Buju who joins Olamide as the only artiste with multiple entries in the first installment of Nigeria Song of the Summer Chart.
With his impressive contribution in Ladipoe’s “Feeling,” Buju enters the chart at No. 2. His verse on Blaqbonez’s “Bling” gives him his second entry at No. 11 while Buju gets his third entry with “Outside” at No. 12. It is even more impressive as all three entries are in the top half of the chart.
Buju has proven he’s a master tactician when it comes to delivering quality and catchy hooks that will be on every lip. Buju’s credentials when it comes to crooning catchy and melodious tunes can’t be questioned and we are excited to see how his push for the title will unfold.
Justin Bieber’s “Peaches” continued its fine run on Nigerian airwaves by entering at No. 15 on the first issue of the Songs of the Summer Chart Nigeria. Thus, making it the only song released by a non-African on the chart. However, with the release of the Masterkraft remix featuring Omah Lay & Alpha P last Friday, “Peaches” might just be the dark horse in the race for No. 1 Song of the summer in Nigeria.
“Peaches” might have given Justin Bieber a No. 1 song in the US, but it’s going to be a different game in Nigeria as he will have to compete with heavyweights who dominates the airwaves and streaming platforms. It’s left to be seen if Beliebers can deliver the prize.
