Omah Lay's Streaming Dominance Continues in First Quarter of 2021
The Nigerian music scene is beginning to pay more attention to streaming numbers. Streaming numbers are one of the empirical bases for the quantification of success and artistes, as well as their fans, are paying close attention to streaming numbers. Today, artistes are becoming more creative in the promotion and publicity of their work. Fans are also beginning to go above and beyond in running up the streaming numbers of their favorite artistes. Fan-driven efforts such as streaming parties, streaming chains, scheduled streaming, etc. are becoming common practice in Nigeria.
In the Nigeria numbers game, Omah Lay is the king of the books. Numbers don’t lie and a look at Omah Lay’s numbers will show you all the facts you need to know about Omah Lay’s streaming dominance. During the first quarter of 2021, Omah Lay was the most streamed artiste in Nigeria with 73.36 million streams thus exercising complete domination of Nigerian streaming space. This is an outstanding feat for a new school artiste who is barely twenty months in the music industry. Omah Lay fended off several heavyweights in the race for the top spot and this further proves that Omah Lay can hold his own and he has rightly earned his seat at the table.
Omah Lay had 11.22% of the total equivalent streams on the Top Streaming Chart in the first quarter and this goes to say that Omah Lay has retained a huge slice of the streaming market in Nigeria. The winner of Next Rated Artiste at the last Headies Award is joined at the top half of the list by Davido and Olamide, with Wizkid coming fourth and Bella Shmurda rounding up the top 5.
Omah Lay was able to achieve this feat with his sensational single ‘Godly’ which dominated the TurnTable streaming chart and was the most streamed song in the first quarter of 2021 with 23.11 million equivalent streams. ‘Godly’ wasn’t Omah Lay’s only song on the streaming list. At NO.3 was Olamide’s ‘Infinity’ a song on which Omah Lay marked his presence in sensational fashion.
Although these figures are a representation of freemium streaming in Nigeria, it gives us a perspective of the consumption behavior in Nigeria and it won’t be wrong to assume that the figures would be similar on premium streaming platforms such as Apple Music and Deezer.
Omah Lay’s run in the industry has been nothing short of breathtaking and in a short time since he burst into the scene, he has proven that he belongs to the top of the game. From all indications, Omah Lay is living up to the hype that saw him won the Next Rated Award at the last Headies Award. There is no question that Omah Lay has earned his place at the top and his numbers have shown that it won’t be out of place for him to have his eyes on the biggest prizes in the coming award season.
