Songs by Female Artistes have reached No. 1 on more charts in 2021 than in the last six months of 2020
Teni’s “FOR YOU” featuring Davido on TurnTable Top 50, Top Streaming Chart and Top Triller Chart, Apple Music Weekly Top Songs, and Gyakie’s “Forever” on Top Triller Chart Nigeria – have all reached No. 1 in 2021.
TurnTable Charts began tracking music in July 2020 and since then, we have documented everything that concerns music in Nigeria till now. Between the first issue of Top Airplay Chart on July 9, 2020, and the last issue of Apple Music Weekly Top Songs on December 29, 2020, only 3 songs by female artistes reached No. 1 on any of the charts published by TurnTable Charts. These songs are; Beyonce’s “ALREADY” on TV Top Songs Chart for one week, Tems’ “Damages” on Top Airplay Chart for one week and Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” on Annual Holidays Chart for one week.
On the TurnTable Top 50, which combines radio airplay, TV airplay, and streaming in Nigeria, no female artiste reached the top five of the chart as a lead artiste with the highest being Tems’ “Damages” at No. 6 (as a lead artiste) and Nicki Minaj’s entry on Davido’s No. 1-peaking “Holy Ground.”
However, since the turn of the new year, Gyakie’s “Forever” has gone to top the Triller Chart Nigeria for three weeks (matching Davido’s “FEM” and only behind Omah Lay’s “Godly” which spent four weeks atop the chart). Also, the song has spent five weeks as the No. 1 song on Shazam in Nigeria. This week, Teni’s “FOR YOU” became the first song by a lead female artiste to reach the summit of TurnTable Top 50. It also debuted at No. 1 on Top Streaming Chart and Apple Music Top Song while also replacing Gyakie’s “Forever” at No. 1 on Top Triller Chart Nigeria.
Mavins newly activated artiste, Ayra Starr, is another female artiste that has enjoyed a great run on the charts in 2021. “Away” barely missed out on No. 1 on Apple Music Top Songs, having led the chart for five days only to be displaced atop the weekly chart by Bella Shmurda’s “Rush.” Not that she would worry much, the song became the highest-peaking song by a female artiste on the Top 50 when it entered No. 5 two weeks ago (Teni’s “FOR YOU” has since topped that by reaching No. 1 and Ayra Starr herself with a new peak at No. 4).
Niniola and Simi have also reached the top twenty of TurnTable Top 50 in 2021 with their features on Falz’s “Squander” (peaked at No. 14) and Chike’s “Running (To You)” [debuted at No. 18 this week]. Cardi B’s “Up” also debuted at No. 20 on the Top 50 while Sia’s "Hey Boy" became the highest-charting song by an international artiste when it debuted and peaked at No. 18. Tiwa Savage’s turn on “BBC (Remix)” has resulted in the song debuting on the Top 50 at No. 22. Gyakie’s “Forever,” already a streaming hit, is now gaining on radio across Nigeria and looking to rise on the TurnTable Top 50.
One thing is sure, we are going to get more hits on the chart by female artistes in 2021.
