Nathaniel Bassey's "Olorun Agbaye/You Are Mighty" featuring Chandler Moore & Oba debuts at No. 50 on Top Streaming Chart to become the first non-secular song to enter the streaming-based chart

Music consumption in Nigeria is dynamic and cuts across different genres. Consumer preference in Nigerian music is reflective of the most popular and mainstream genres; hence secular music genres are more popular and have a larger audience than non-secular/gospel genre. Secular music are more popular across all online and offline music platforms and make up the most streamed music and most played music across Nigerian airwaves.

While gospel music have a dedicated following, the numbers are small (when compared to secular counterparts) and thoroughly dwarfed by secular music genres. The huge disparity in popularity and size of both genres make it a herculean task for gospel artistes to break into both TurnTable streaming, airplay and ultimately the TurnTable Top 50.

You Are Mighty

Nathaniel Bassey has however made history as the first non-secular and gospel artiste to debut on TurnTable Streaming Chart. This is no small feat considering the huge consumption difference, which exist between secular genres and gospel genre. Nathaniel Bassey’s new single “Olorun Agbaye/You Are Mighty” enjoyed a streaming run across streaming platforms and pulled numbers never previously recorded by any gospel artiste.

At any rate, Nathaniel Bassey’s “Olorun Agbaye/You Are Mighty” featuring Chandler Moore & Oba has made a strong case for the digital success of gospel songs and inspired believe that with some more publicity, there’s a chance that gospel genre can compete digitally with some secular genres. However, it is left to see if Nathaniel Bassey’s record breaking song will usher in the next level in the digital success and popularity of gospel songs.
